Fashion is interesting in that, as much as we appreciate the change of seasons and seeing new things on the runway, there is this inevitable obsession with consistency. Icons don’t become icons by changing things all of the time. In order to create a strong brand, consistency is key right? We see it at McDonalds in the middle of rural India when you are far more interested in seeing the golden arches then the golden temple. Why? Because its consistent. It’s familiar. I could go to any Starbucks in the city and my coffee will literally taste the same every time (theoretically). It’s basic in terms of marketing, so why are we embarrassed to look the same in fashion?
Anna Wintour hasn’t changed her hair in literally 50 years, and the same goes for Bill Cunningham sporting that blue street cleaner jacket. It’s time that we embrace the fact that we are wearing the same dress for two profile pictures in a row! ( … seriously, can we make this a trendy thing to do?)
Anyways, my point is that this is what I love about Terry Richardson. He has that same iconic fashion every time, you could literally spot him in a crowd, a modern day Waldo if you will. Not only does he look iconic, but he has that clear identity as a photographer without putting babies in flowers (sorry Anne Geddes, we’re all really over you). I love how he makes every single person he photographs look bad-ass. From Miley to Obama, I salute you Terry. Here are some amazing Terry shots below, but I strongly encourage everyone and their dogs to look at a wider selection of his work.
